Childbirth, nature’s way of telling a women “Wei time to really take good care of your body!”
The tremendous stress a woman’s body goes through after labour is unimaginable; haywire hormones, vagina discharge otherwise known as lochia and floppy tummy etc etc.
Also my entire body becomes so lax the digestive system actually lost control causing me to battle again my long term nemesis, IBS (but I’m better already yay!) and other gut problems.
The scariest part is, I’m not sure whether this has got anything to do with epidural but the first few days (after I got home from the hospital) whenever I sit down especially on my bed, I get bouts of electric shock from my tailbone that radiates all the way up my spine! The stabbing pain is quick and swift, not forgetting excruciating with little time to react.
Whichever method of labour you’ve taken, caring for your body is very essential after giving birth. So Here comes postnatal massage.
I was given the opportunity to try out ‘Huang Ah Ma The Oriental Spa Chamber’ post natal massage therapy to help to restore my body to its pre-pregnancy condition by retraining muscles and connective tissues.
Situated at the heart of Chinatown (50 Mosque Street, Singapore 059528) , you are able to find The Oriental Spa Chamber under Porcelain Hotel.
Fit for its name, The Oriental Spa Chamber is decorated with classic wood like interior to mimic the concept of ancient chinese dynasty, traditional yet contemporary.
Upon arrival, I was ushered to a cozy corner to enjoy my welcoming ginger tea.
Post-natal massage helps to realign your body weight to pre-pregnancy condition, helps to get rid of access ‘wind’ and tone up the stomach muscles after 9 months of expansion. Aside from that, reinstating the uterus is very important because after birth the uterus tends to ‘drop’ and sit lower than its original position, the only way to bring it back up is post-massage and kegel exercises.
I was invited to lay down on this cozy yet firm massage bed before starting my treatment.
Dimed lights and cozy bed, my session begins with a soft touch using specially blended jamu oil made of Indonesian, Thailand and Chinese herbs is used in the massage to generate heat to keep the body warm for at least 12 hours, so the Chinese believe “wind” will not get into the mother’s body.
I haven’t had a proper massage since the day I got pregnant, so this is ahhhh bliss~
Well, long story short, I was considered high risked for pre-term delivery(due to some special condition), I avoided all sorts of contact that involves straining of the body. However, if you are leading a healthy pregnancy do note that The Oriental Spa Chamber also provides Prenatal massage to pregnant mothers relax and soothe tensed and tired muscles in helping the following:
- Increase blood and lymph circulation, thereby reducing edema (swelling)
- Relieve muscle spasms, cramps, and myofascial pain
- Increase endorphin levels
- Provide emotional support to assist in minimizing mood swings
- Reduce anxiety and depression.
Body massage for me is a mix of both pain and pleasure, in short there are areas where it aches so bad but I know is good for my well being! Is very nice and comforting to know that my therapist always double check with me on the pain level whenever she moves to a fresh area.
Overall the pain level is, pretty bearable only at one point where she ‘smacks’ the tummy area, also the most important area to restore my uterus back in shape.
Following the massage is the herbal steam bath therapy, where I finally get a good 15 mins of complete relaxation.
The traditional postnatal confinement of women after the birth of the child is vital for the recovery of the mother’s womb, improving the mother’s health as well as preventing after birth backaches. Products with a perfect blend of ingredients and vitamin goodness are necessary for the mother in aiding the confinement process that promotes blood circulation, calming and reduces pain.
After my treatment I headed to the shower area. Not to worry if you are concern about showering during confinement, I’ve check with the therapist that this treatment is completely safe to head for a quick shower to clear all the impurities and herbs applied onto the body.
I’m very thankful that I got the opportunity to try out services from The Oriental Spa Chamber and like they say
‘After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile’
and with that, once I’m well rested I can muster up more energy to take care of my little one.
